On October 2, 2025, the Research School of Southeast Asian Studies (RSEAS) at Xiamen University joined the 10th-anniversary celebration of the Laos China General Chamber of Commerce (LCGCC) in Vientiane, where they launched the "Laos Overseas Chinese Research Center" and released the pioneering historical monograph A Historical Account of Overseas Chinese in Laos. The event gathered senior Lao officials, including Politburo members Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune and Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Vientiane Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone, and Chinese Ambassador to Laos Fang Hong.
The newly established center, a collaborative effort between LCGCC and RSEAS, will function as a non-profit platform dedicated to archival preservation, cultural exchanges, and academic research on the Lao Chinese community. Its inaugural publication, A Historical Account of Overseas Chinese in Laos, systematically documents the migration history, socioeconomic contributions, and cultural endeavors of Chinese communities in Laos.
The LCGCC, founded in 2015, has played a pivotal role in promoting China-Laos trade and infrastructure cooperation. The center’s establishment marks a significant step in strengthening people-to-people ties and providing academic support for bilateral collaboration. The celebration concluded with a group photo session and networking discussions among attendees.
This initiative underscores RSEAS’s commitment to advancing scholarly exchanges and contributing to the China-Laos community with a shared future.
