On the morning of November 29, 2024, the opening ceremony of the International Seminar on High-Quality Co-Construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and China-ASEAN Infrastructure Connectivity was held at the Great Hall of the National University of Laos in Vientiane. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Dexanourath Seneduangdeth, President of the National University of Laos; Phouphet Kyophilavong, Vice President of the National University of Laos; and Shi Dalin, Vice President of Xiamen University, China. Scholars and think tank experts from leading universities in China and eight ASEAN countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines, also participated in the seminar.
Following the opening ceremony, Gao Yanjie, Dean of the School of International Relations/Research School of Southeast Asian Studies at Xiamen University, and Somkhit Boulidam, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the National University of Laos, signed a Memorandum of Agreement to deepen academic and institutional cooperation.
During the event, the Laos Overseas Workstation of the School of International Relations/Research School of Southeast Asian Studies at Xiamen University was officially inaugurated. This marks the second overseas workstation established by the school, following the first in Malaysia. The launch of the Laos Overseas Workstation represents a significant step in strengthening academic collaboration and fostering closer ties between China and ASEAN countries.
The seminar was jointly organized by the School of International Relations/Research School of Southeast Asian Studies at Xiamen University and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the National University of Laos, with co-hosting support from the Institute of International Relations at Yunnan University.
As part of the seminar, participants conducted field research in the northern Laotian city of Luang Prabang and visited the China-Laos Railway station to observe the construction and operational achievements of the railway. The delegation then traveled northbound on the China-Laos Railway to Kunming, where they held a roundtable discussion at the Institute of International Relations at Yunnan University.
This event, widely covered by both Chinese and international media, has further expanded cultural exchanges, enhanced regional connectivity, and deepened practical cooperation initiatives under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
