“ASEAN’s drive towards the ASEAN Economic Community cannot be substantiated without a well-thought out policy of dealing with trade in services” (H.E. Mr. Ong Keng Yong, the Secretary – General of ASEAN, 1st ASEAN Services forum, 5-6 July 2005, Ha Noi, Viet Nam).
About the Forum
The 2nd ASEAN Services Forum is intended to be a consultative dialogue involving stakeholders in the services sector to openly discuss and provide input for ASEAN policy making in trade in services. It is through this occasion that the major players are expected to share and to learn about the latest ASEAN policies and ground realities related to trade in services, and contribute their frank assessment and relevant recommendations to the policy makers.
This consultative dialogue is targeted to focus on the theme “Raising the Competitiveness of ASEAN Services Industry,” which will explore possible regional initiatives to enhance the competitiveness of the region’s services sector, including on increasing the role of ASEAN as a logistics and outsourcing hub.
The 2nd ASEAN Services Forum builds upon the success of the 1st Forum which was held in Ha Noi, Viet Nam on 5-6 July 2005, which gathered around 200 participants from all ASEAN Member Countries as well as international experts. The 2nd Services Forum will expect stronger participation of private sector players, as well as more open discussions.
The 2nd ASEAN Services Forum is organised by the ASEAN Secretariat in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade and Industry of Singapore, and with funding support from the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
