Spotlight On:
ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity

Located in Los Banos, Philippines, the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity or ACB, is an international inter-governmental organisation established by ASEAN through an agreement signed by the ASEAN governments on 27 September 2005. The ACB’s main task is to facilitate cooperation and coordination among ASEAN Member Countries on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the region. The ACB seeks to encourage and enable ASEAN Member Countries to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss. The Centre promotes training and networking for environment officials, and research, and manages biodiversity database. The ACB also coordinates programmes such as the ASEAN Heritage Parks and ensures that it is effectively implemented.

The ACB has its roots in the ASEAN Regional Centre for Biodiversity Conservation Project (ARCBC) - a joint cooperation project between ASEAN and the European Union from 1999 to 2004.

Headed by an Executive Director, the Centre is managed by a Governing Board, comprising the ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment (ASOEN) and the Secretary-General of ASEAN. The Board oversees the overall responsibility and accountability for the operations of the Centre. The current Acting Executive Director is Mr. Roland Yap.
