LOCAL literary practitioners and teachers must use more interactive and interesting medium in showcasing literature in order to attract more audience and fans, said a senior government officer last night.
Permanent Secretary of Education (Core) Hj Mahrub Hj Murni said that in the context of global literature, written media had been shifted to visual media which is more expressive, exclusive and conducive.
"Latest technology advancements have given the space and new hopes for the continuation of the entity of literature," he said during a closing ceremony of the Literature Festival 2011 held at the Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) Studio in the capital.
However, Hj Murni said this could not be accomplished without the supervision of groups who become administrators or managers of literature.
He said the task of a literature manager was wide, from the educational level to its implementation and business, but the work still had the same basic understanding of the values of literature both in terms of concepts and its dissemination to the community.
"For example, local folklores and poetries can be given visual freshness by demonstrating it through stage performance or broadcast media.
"More so in the genre of poetry, uniquely in Brunei, as the place of traditional literary entity is still secured or produced," Hj Mahrub added.
He said that in this regard, Brunei needs a 'literary manager' who is competent to raise these values to the global arena just like other countries who are doing it under the framework of preserving their local heritage and tradition.
"Literary management that is commercially-driven both at the education and implementation level and its adoption to the public, must not forget the special characteristics and unique features that are available in such a literature entity.
"For example, if the stories of the people of Brunei are manifested into a drama or a movie, they must not overlook the local values of it," the permanent secretary said.
The Literature Festival 2011 featuring traditional folklore and poems was organised by students of Malay Literature programme at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
As part of the programme, a colouring contest for children in two categories was held at the open area of Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Shopping Complex on April 24.
A total of 39 children took part in the competition which featured images of scenes from the Bruneian folklore series, Sulong dan Bungsu.
The night also witnessed the guest of honour handed over some of the amount raised through a donation programme during the festival to the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans.
The invited guests and audience were also entertained to a theatre literary performance by UBD students.
