On November 1, 2016, Niu Junkai, Professor of College of History of Zhongshan University, visited Research School for Southeast Asia Studies of Xiamen University and delivered a speech “The Ancient Millennium on the Sea Silk Road: the History and Culture of Champa”.
Professor Niu Junkai’s lecture consisted of four parts: the origin of Champa; the interpretation pattern of the political history of Champa; the transfer of the religion and the political center of Champa and the present situation of the study of the history and culture of Champa. In the first part, through the introduction of the comparison of historical materials and the translation and textual research of Vo Canh, Professor Niu listed the main views on the origin and development of Champa. In the second part, Professor Niu used Walters’s Mandala system and the “Trinity” paradigm to explain that the ancient Champa was not a unified political body. In the third part, he talked about the worship of Linga and Shiva, and the rise and the integration of Yan Po Nagar in My Son and Nha Trang, and the development and change of the two.
